Second Best Coffee has a new label design.  I like the bright orange.  It makes me happy.  I went to Second Best Coffee for a Red Ribbon Nitro an d ended up with a bag of their El Salvador too.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Kansas City is a coffee town.  You can get a good cup of Joe on just about every street corner.  It's when you go around the corner that you find the hidden gems of the city.   For Second Best Coffee you have to know to go around the corner to a little parking lot on the edge of the Waldo area just off 85th.  Once you know  -  you know and life is good.  I love Second Best.  I have had several of their coffees and have loved most of them.  There is a pour over bar and a small assortment of espresso/milk drinks and some other cocktails.  I saw these on their facebook page and am looking forward to trying them soon.  -Dreamsicle, iced latte with orange ginger syrup, garnished with a twist    -Arnold's Summer Kyoto, iced kyoto shaken with a lemon mint syrup, garnished with mint

I talked about the Red Ribbon Nitro here.  It's another good reason to stop by on these hot summer days.  They are only open until 5, so don't dawdle.  They also carry beans from guest roasters.  Check the website to see who's on the shelf this month.  http://www.secondbestcoffee.com/

This is supposed to be a review about a coffee, not just the shop - so here goes.

I'm not overly familiar with the coffees of El Salvador but it was there, so why not.

I brewed some up in the beehouse and found it to have a medium body with an aroma that was lightly fruity with a hint of chocolate.

The taste was fruitier as well as juicy but not like darker fruits - cherries and the like.  Maybe apricots, yellow fruits.  Softer - not a harsh coffee at all.  The acidity was pretty balanced and it has a lighter mouthfeel.

I decided to try it iced.  I've noticed that most people like to use darker, harsher coffees for for iced coffees.  I do not.  For me that makes an iced coffee that is a little too dry and a lot too "needs sugar".  I don't like to add sugar and milk most of the time.  For espresso drinks, but for pour overs and iced I stick to medium or medium-dark coffees.

This was an EXCELLENT iced coffee.  I used the recipe for the V60 given in the Land of 1000 Hills brew guide which was suggested to me by Sharon of Magic Coffee Truck  The flash method really enhanced the fruitiness of the coffee.  No sugar needed.  I drank way too much the first day and had quite the caffeine buzz.  I'm from a Southern Family and we drank glass after glass of sweet tea.  That's how I treated this coffee.  I was pretty zippy for awhile.

My bag was gone in no time, but it was pretty wonderful while it lasted.

I love coffee - GOOD COFFEE, not that stuff in a can.  I'm addicted to the small batch roasted beans from artisan roasters around the country.  These are some notes on coffees I have enjoyed.  (the ones I didn't like I pretend didn't happen to me)
