Hoka Coffee - Organic Bolivian

When searching for new coffee roasters to try, I stumbled across Hoka in South Dakota.  My dad is Native and supporting Native owned businesses whenever I can is important to me.  It's also important to support socially responsible businesses and small businesses.  Hoka wins on all 3 counts!

And the coffee was good too.  All sorts of win here. Plus one of my favorite balloon customers is Lakota.  She's quite an artist and fun to make balloons for.  She's also the reason I know how to say butterfly in Sioux.  AND.... I see from Instagram that one of the owners is a runner.  Running saved my life and supporting another runner's business is important.   Like I said, all sorts of win.

I'm going to borrow from the Hoka website ( www.hokacoffee.com) and let them tell you about their mission.

Hoka! Coffee Company is a Native American owned Coffee Company based on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation since 2013. Here at Hoka! Coffee Company we lived with two missions, one is to create a Coffee Bean roasting company which provide jobs and economic growth for the Pine Ridge Reservation and its community. Our second is to produce fresh coffee beans from indigenous smallholder farms in South and Central America that are guaranteed fair working conditions and a fair share for their product.A large part of our vision when starting Hoka! Coffee Company was to provide a mechanism where people can learn about entrepreneurship and to make a small dent in the unemployment rate on the Pine Ridge Reservation. We can’t imagine one day that people will recall Pine Ridge Reservation as "Hey they make a great Hoka Coffee out there!" - Sharice Davids

I ordered the Organic Bolivian which is a med/dark roast.  I often stay away from darker roasts because too many people go way too far into the dark area.  They say medium dark but what they mean is dark with oil starting to form.  Still, I wanted to try the Bolivian, so I just went for it.

Big sigh of relief, it wasn't over roasted!  No oil slick on these beans.  They were a true med/dark roast.

It was a sweeter coffee with hints of a spiciness.  It had a nice heavier body and a great mouthfeel.  I also found a rich flavor, probably owing to the darker roast, but it did not pass into smokey roasty territory.  The acid was lighter.  The aroma was warm & inviting in the bag and fruiter & sweetish in the cup.  It had a fruity taste that became more pronounced as it cooled.  Orange, richer though, like a blood orange.  Darker, more intense cherry notes.  The kind from the peak of the season, not the lighter ones from early or late in the season.  A depth to the flavor.

As usual I brewed my beans in the beehouse, V60 and the Kalita Wave.  More often in the V60 for this bag.

And I got a mug for my ever growing collection!  (and a sticker for my notebook)

I don't rate coffees.  Mostly I don't review them if I don't like them.  I'm not a pro so I won't say something negative online.  Online is forever.  But when I like something I am happy to tell you about it.  I liked this one.  Check them out at

That sounds like it ended up being awesome! I'm always leery of those darker roasted beans...

I'm usually pretty leery of darker beans. I like to taste coffee, not roast, but these I enjoyed.

I love coffee - GOOD COFFEE, not that stuff in a can.  I'm addicted to the small batch roasted beans from artisan roasters around the country.  These are some notes on coffees I have enjoyed.  (the ones I didn't like I pretend didn't happen to me)
